A draw in the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Oval last weekend brought the curtain down on one of the greatest summers English cricket has ever seen.
The tantalising prospect of a home World Cup followed by an Ashes series delivered everything we expected and more, and, in the World Cup final at Lord’s and the final day at Headingley, provided us with two of the most dramatic days of sport in this country’s history.
There were heroic displays from Ben Stokes, Jason Roy, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, and so many more, while Pat Cummins and, of course, Steve Smith, won over the nation’s cricket fans with their unquestionable brilliance.
There were spectacular catches, like Stokes’ against South Africa, some incredible hitting, like Eoin Morgan’s record-breaking knock against Afghanistan, and some breathless bowling, like Archer’s devastating spell to Smith Lord’s.
England rose high, climbing their Everest to win their first ever World Cup at the end of an incredible four-year transformation since the humiliation of 2015.
And there were epic lows, Australia regaining the Urn and the Test batting line-up twice being skittled for less than 100 runs, though remarkably, England ended up winning both games.
