How England's Euro 2020 side have fared since Italy loss with 5 stars struggling

England suffered heartbreak this summer as they fell right at the final hurdle against Italy, who won Euro 2020 via a penalty shootout in front of a packed Wembley crowd.

An exhilarating month ended in bitter disappointment, but England's summer stars achieved hero status for their efforts as the country got behind the national team as a sense of pride that had been lacking was restored.

A gloomy few days followed the defeat, and the emotional hangover looks to have continued for some stars as many members of the side that played in the final have struggled to get going this season.

Some players have kicked on and picked up on where they left off with England, but some of the stars that shone the brightest for the Three Lions over the summer have dwindled domestically, and the Euro heartache appears to have taken it's toll on certain members of Gareth Southgate's squad.

Here Mirror Football takes a look at the England stars that featured in the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy, and how they've fared since...

Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford reminded doubters that he is clearly England's no.1 following another dazzling display between the sticks for his country, despite constant question marks over his club performances.

The Everton goalkeeper did all he could during the shootout defeat, even denying the usually-clinical Jorginho, and he was part of a Rafa Benitez side that started off the season in excellent form.

However, Everton's form has taken a drastic turn and Pickford was on the receiving end of five Watford goals at Goodison Park, and the Toffees are without a win in five Premier League matches

Benitez has been hampered with injury however, and Everton's defence has been poor to kick off the season, and Pickford can't keep them all out.

Kieran Trippier

Life is a lot different for Kieran Tripper as opposed to most England stars, as he and Jude Bellingham are the only members of Southate's squad who play domestic football outside of the Premier League.

Tripper won La Liga with Atletico Madrid last season, and Diego Simeone's side have only lost once in the league so far this campaign, but have lacked cutting edge as they have had to settle for five draws.

Atleti are usually renowned for their defensive stability, but they have started the season in uncharacteristic fashion, and are also struggling in the Champions League.

Tripper has enjoyed a decent start to the season, but is yet to register an assist, something he managed on six occasions last year as Atleti won the Spanish division.

Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker was one of the surprise packages over the summer, and his blistering pace proved to be a valuable asset to Southgate at the back, as the Manchester City star got England out of a lot of potential problems on the counter.

Walker's speed has also helped Pep Guardiola this season, and City continue to look dangerous while completely dominating most opposition.

The defender even scored a rare goal in the Champions League this season during a 5-1 thrashing against Club Brugge, and the England international has only missed a handful of games due to Guardiola's trademark rotation strategy.

Walker remains one of the stars that Guardiola can trust, and his physicality will be a valuable asset should England qualify for Qatar due to the difficult climate.

John Stones

John Stones has only recently returned to the City line-up after returning to full fitness following a injury sustained after Euro 2020, but City have improved since he slotted back into the side.

The defender was excellent alongside Harry Maguire in the summer, and Stones continued his impact by scoring a crucial goal against Hungary at Wembley during a 1-1 draw.

City are yet to concede a goal in the league when Stones has started this season, with the most recent example being against United, who registered more shots on target against their own goalkeeper than against Ederson in the City net.

Stones looks like he is getting back to his best, which is far from what can be said about his England centre-back partner.

Harry Maguire

Just like in the World Cup, Maguire delivered a bullet header in the knockout stages, and the big defender was the main man at the back as England made their way to the final.

However, Maguire does not look like himself and has looked increasingly out of his depth since returning from an injury sustained during United's first Premier League loss of the season against Aston Villa.

Maguire was picked apart during a Liverpool onslaught that saw United lose 5-0 at Old Trafford, and although he shrugged off that performance with a clean sheet against Tottenham, he was again made to look vulnerable against City.

The England defender has already come back from one difficult spell in his career, and he may have to repeat that to establish himself once more.

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw was exceptional during the Euro's and many fans agreed that there weren't many better left-back's in the world given his high calibre performances both at the back end of the season for United, and England.

The defender even inherited the name 'Shawberto Carlos' according to teammates, and it was Shaw that opened the scoring in the final after just two minutes, sending the nation wild.

However, since then it's been quite a different narrative for Shaw who has been part of a leaky United defence, and has looked lacklustre since the season started.

Shaw was influential for United down the left last season, and many were excited for the defender's deliveries to feed Cristiano Ronaldo, but the link-up hasn't worked just yet.

Declan Rice

Declan Rice was one of England's standout players during the Euro's and sparked up a brilliant partnership with Kalvin Phillips in the centre of the park.

The West Ham star has continued his exceptional run of form and David Moyes' side are flying this season, recently ending Liverpool's unbeaten run to leapfrog them in the Premier League table.

Rice has also added goals to his game, and his been prolific in the Europa League as West Ham eye a European run as well as setting their sights on the top four.

The midfielder continues to impress, and could be influential in England's midfield for years to come.

Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips was named England's player of the year following his incredible contribution over the summer, and the Leeds star has helped re-establish Marcelo Bielsa's side as a Premier League level team.

The midfielder's performances have linked him with moves to some of the Premier League's biggest clubs, but Phillips has struggled in an underwhelming Leeds side so far this season.

The Leeds outfit that took the game to the big clubs and blew sides away with their attacking prowess have been far from their best this season, and their only wins have come against newly promoted sides.

Phillips continues to run the Leeds midfield, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him leave Elland Road at some point in the near future.

Mason Mount

Mason Mount was Chelsea's hero last season on many occasions, and the young midfielder was also pivotal for England during the latter stages of the European Championships this summer.

Mount has battled a few fitness issues since the start of the season, but continues to be Thomas Tuchel's go-to man when fit, and the Chelsea star recorded his first ever hat-trick during a 7-0 victory against Norwich.

The midfielder has also registered two assists this season as Chelsea currenlty sit top of the Premier League, and Mount will play a crucial part of Tuchel's title charge.

The 22-year-old continues to mature and get better season by season.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling was the difference for England during the start of the Euro 2020, and the City winger scored their first three goals in the competition, helping them through the group stage before opening the scoring against Germany.

Despite a brilliant summer, Guardiola appears to lack trust in Sterling and he appears out of favour under the Spaniard - even being tipped to secure a move away from the club.

It's always difficult to guarantee minutes at a club blessed with so many world-class options, but Sterling is overlooked as his relationship with Guardiola continues to fluctuate.

Sterling has only been handed two starts in the Premier League this season, and was an unused substitute for the first time against United on Saturday.

Harry Kane

It was a slow start for Harry Kane during the summer, but the striker found his form when it mattered most, and his diving header against Germany started a chain reaction that saw him end the tournament with four goals.

Due to his heroics with Tottenham the season before, Kane was heavily linked with a long-awaited transfer away from Spurs, with City heavily interested as Guardiola looked to sign a centre-forward.

The move could not be completed though, and Kane has not been the same player since, and one of the world's best strikers has completely gone into hiding so far this season.

Antonio Conte will hope that he can get Kane firing again, but with just one goal so far in the Premier League this season, the forward is seriously struggling.

Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish became a widely loved figure over the summer, and fans were disappointed that they didn't see more of him during Euro 2020, as the bench was his typical starting role.

The midfielder was introduced off the bench in the final, but although he failed to push England to success, his performances throughout the competition and in the season prior with Aston Villa earned him a record move to City.

City paid £100m for his services, and Grealish has settled in extremely quickly under Guardiola, scoring two goals and three assists across all competitions so far this season.

Grealish isn't the club's standout star anymore since arriving at City from Villa, but he certainly looks comfortable alongside other world-class talent.

Bukayo Saka

It was Bukayo Saka's missed penalty that handed Italy the victory this summer, and that moment would've broken many players due to the weight of the situation.

However, Saka has proven his mental strength, and the Arsenal youngster has been excellent for his side this season, driving his side towards the top four after shrugging off a terrible start.

The 20-year-old continues to improve, and he has etched his name into the starting XI on a permanent basis under Mikel Arteta alongside Emile Smith-Rowe, who will also be linking up with Saka for England after his first call-up.

Saka has only managed one goal in the Premier League but his influence to the team is considerably more valuable, and his impact on Arteta's side so far this season is clear to see.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho held a similar role to Grealish over the summer, and was predominantly used off the bench during the Euros - but the winger finally secured his £73m move to United following the conclusion of the tournament.

However, the young talent that lit up the Bundesliga has flopped so far to kick off his United career, and Sancho is yet to register a single goal or assist.

Sancho is experiencing an unwelcome drought, and United could do with his form turning around as soon as possible as they continue to struggle under Solskjaer this season.

There are even reports that Solskjaer is contemplating trialling Sancho in a new role as he desperately looks to get the best out of his summer signing.

Jordan Henderson

Southgate took a gamble and selected Jordan Henderson this summer despite the midfielder barely making it back from injury at the end of the season with Liverpool

The risk paid off, and Henderson was not only a useful asset within the squad, but also within the dressing room as England made their way to the final.

Henderson has been pivotal in Liverpool's midfield once again this season, and Jurgen Klopp's side are considerably better when they're captain is fit as opposed to when he is absent.

The midfielder has also managed two goals so far this season, and Henderson will be hoping for an injury free year as Liverpool target another trophy success.

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford made five appearances throughout Euro 2020, but it was common knowledge that the United star was awaiting much needed shoulder surgery, which he received later that summer.

The recovery put Rashford out until mid-October when he finally made his return off the bench against Leicester, scoring in a 4-2 defeat.

In fact, Rashford has been in great form since returning, and has scored three goals in his first six games back, despite not lasting more than an hour in any of those appearances.

Rashford's season is still just beginning, but England fans will be hoping that his completed surgery will allow him to kick on and utilise his full potential.
