Derek, 52, had been incredibly short of breath and had been feeling extremely unwell for a number of days.

After hearing his symptoms, Dr. Hilary urged Kate to put down the phone and call an ambulance immediately.

This was due to the fact that her husband was displaying 'unusual' coronavirus symptoms.

Initially a cough and a fever were the only key symptoms people were warned to look out for - neither of which Derek had.

Dr. Hilary explained the ordeal on Good Morning Britain when he explained: "I had spoken to Derek and I was concerned.

"I was really concerned just by the way he was speaking and his breathlessness and I told him to do a simple test, not a diagnostic test.

"All I asked him to do was hold his breath and see how long he could hold it for, and it was less than 10 seconds.

"I said 'Okay look, now is the time to call an ambulance' and this was when he was admitted."

Hilary continued by explaining that being able to hold your breath for a mere 10 seconds is 'abnormal'.

"You and I could hold our breath for over a minute, [someone of his age] should be able to last a minute I would say if you are fit and well, and 10 seconds was abnormal, and while it was not a diagnostic test anyway it was a reason to get him to hospital straight away."

It comes as Kate made a tearful return to Good Morning Britain on Friday, as she gave a live update on her husband's battle with Covid-19.

She spoke to Ben Shepherd and Ranvir Singh for the first time in 10 weeks, after she stepped back from her role on the show following Derek admittance to hospital.
