America’s mental healthcare system is in crisis – and Americans are turning elsewhere for help. Evangelical Christian leaders such as megachurch pastor Rick Warren have stepped up their efforts to make the church more accessible to congregants with mental illness.
Christian research firm Lifeway released a study last year that said nearly half of evangelical Christians believe people with serious mental illness can get better with “Bible study and prayer alone”. But this view is changing as more people move to improve the ways in which congregations address mental health treatment.
We want to know: how does your place of worship address mental illness? What kind of advice have you received from religious leaders? Has your church, temple or synagogue’s approach to mental health changed? We’ll feature selected responses on the Guardian.
