How does you GP surgery rank compared to the rest of England?

A survey of more than a million patients has revealed which GP surgeries in Bristol top the league table when it comes to patient satisfaction.

The GP Patient Survey, conducted by NHS England includes information about the performance of your GP surgery - from GP's communication skills to the helpfulness of the reception staff and how easy it is to get an appointment.

Simply enter your GP surgery’s name, into our interactive gadget, and you’ll get the range of information that compares your surgery to England’s average score.

Here are the top 10 in our area:

  1. Longton Grove Surgery, in Weston-super-Mare
  2. Wellington Road Surgery, in North Yate
  3. Sea Mills Surgery, in Sea Mills
  4. Pembroke Road, in Clifton
  5. Monks Park Surgery, in Horfield
  6. Fallodon Way Medical Centre, in Henleaze
  7. Horfield Health Centre, in Horfield

But, at Bristol Live we want to look at the appointment ratings in a little more detail, following the array of comments on our recent Facebook post.

We grouped together the GP surgeries across Bristol according to their parliamentary constituency and have focused on three key areas, namely:

  • The overall experience of the surgery as “good”
  • The satisfaction of days and times that appointments are on offer
  • If patients had a “good” experience the last time they made an appointment

Based on the above criteria, North Bristol had the highest percentage of patients who were happy with the overall running of their practice and South Bristol had the lowest.

The results

Percentage of patients who rate the overall running of their practice as “good”:

  • North Bristol - 88%
  • East Bristol -  86.8%
  • South Bristol - 82.2%
  • West Bristol - 84.8%

Percentage of patients who are satisfied with the days and times that appointments are on offer:

  • North Bristol - 74.1%
  • East Bristol - 62.1%
  • South Bristol - 62.1%
  • West Bristol - 65.4%

Percentage of patients who had a “good” experience during their last appointment:

  • North Bristol - 77.9%
  • East Bristol - 75.3%
  • South Bristol - 69.2%
  • West Bristol 68.2%

However, we know from speaking to our readers, getting a routine appointment is proving difficult for many.

A patient, who wishes to remain anonymous said: “There is always at least a 3 week wait for an appointment and we are never able to see the same doctor.

“If we need an urgent appointment we are able to ring on the day providing we can get through on the telephone. Many times we have had to drive to the surgery as it is impossible to get through on the phone.

“There are some lovely, knowledgeable and caring doctors at the surgery but these appointment problems outway the good.”

South Bristol patient Bobbie commented: “Luckily, I haven't needed a same day appointment since a newsletter was sent out advising of the in-person queuing system.

“I am concerned though that the winter is approaching and the idea of queuing outside in wind and rain for the surgery to open is ridiculous if you are ill. I remember the last time they had this system it didn't work as people were queuing round the block at 8am.

“I think this puts people off and it is why people leave it too late to see a doctor and then end up either at the walk in or in A&E.”

The GP Patient survey doesn’t reflect these opinions, so we want to know more. If you have a story about your GP surgery and how difficult, or easy, you find it to get an appointment please email Ella.Buxton@reachplc.com
