'How does Matt Hancock know that we're not behaving in Bolton?' Conservative MP asks

A Bolton Tory MP has called on the government to provide evidence for placing Greater Manchester back under the toughest set of restrictions.

Bolton was placed into Tier 3, meaning that hospitality will remain closed, alongside other entertainment venues such as play areas and cinemas.

The government has justified the decision by stating that case rates remain high despite the R rate falling across the North West.

A statement on the Parliamentary website reads: "While there has been continued improvement in Greater Manchester, weekly case rates remain very high, especially amongst those aged over 60, at around 260 per 100,000 people.

"The pressure on the local NHS is decreasing in some areas but remains a concern; Manchester University hospital and Pennine Acute Trust remain under significant pressure."

Bolton West MP Chris Green has now called on the government to explain the decision and questioned how Health Secretary Matt Hancock knows people in Bolton aren't "behaving".

Responding to political pundit Dan Hodges on Twitter, Mr Green wrote:

"@MattHancock said that Cornwall is in T1 because of how well people have behaved. Does he spend much time there or has it been reported to him.

"I would like to see that report and the GM version."

Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi also voiced her disappointment at the borough being placed in Tier 3, while admitting it was "inevitable".

The Labour MP tweeted: "Disappointing that Bolton has been put in to the toughest restrictions again.

"While this was inevitable, it is clear that the Government's strategy since July has not been working.

"I'll continue to do everything I can to advocate for more support for my constituents."
