How Do You Gain the Skills to Dress Well?

For most people, wearing what feels most comfortable is enough. You could share the same sentiment, too. Pairing polo shirts with denim, khaki, or shorts may be all you need to consider where fashion is concerned. Comfort doesn't have to mean sacrificing style, however. You can enjoy both, but there are skills to gain and changes to make.

Understand That Dressing Well Is a Skill

Stylists have a job for exactly this reason. They know what fashion pieces to put together to make anyone look put together and amazing. Not everyone has the eye for what looks chic and fashionable.

  • You can develop the same skills with regard to your personal style. What they know, you can learn, too, with a bit of practice and patience.
  • Accept that your fashion sense might need a bit of work, so your mind is open to all the possibilities. If your personal style is criticised, you won't hurt so badly, either.
  • Practice what you learn until you master the skill to dress well. Keep on learning to stay on trend without losing sight of your personal preference.

Check If You're Guilty of Any Hygiene Mistakes

Even if you scored 10 in looks, you'll instantly hit zero if you smell gross or your clothes are all creased and wrinkled.

If you have perfectly good hygiene, great! No need to do anything more.

If not, find out if you make some of these common mistakes:

  • Not showering often enough or wearing deodorant
  • Smells bad, really
  • Bad breath
  • Greasy or stinky hair
  • Wearing stained, wrinkled, or ratty clothes

Know Your Colours and the Best Way to Style Them

Even if blue is your favourite colour, it might be the wrong shade for you.

  • Experts recommend that you choose colours that match your natural colouring, as they're the most flattering option. This is where you identify if your skin has a warm, cool or neutral undertone through a series of tests—veins, jewellery, and fabrics.
  • Go for a professional colour analysis if needed.
  • Based on the results, identify how to combine such colours. You might look best in contrasting shades or a soft combination of shades.
  • Invest in neutral pieces that will come in handy before and after you discover your personal colours. Neutrals are classic, timeless, and you can't go wrong with them.

Only Wear What Fits

When it comes to fashion, fit trumps brand and price. Even the most expensive top will be wasted on you if it looks sloppy.

  • Know your correct measurements before you go clothes shopping for the best fit. Get professionally measured if needed.
  • Slim fit doesn't mean looking like you're about to swim or dive. The fabric should skim, not cling to your body.
  • The shoulder seams must not be too tight or drooping off your shoulder's edge.
  • Baggy may seem comfortable, but it can ruin your overall look.
  • Pants shouldn't be too short or too long but sit just right on top of your shoes.

Love Your Body Shape

It's normal to see your flaws first before your best features, but don't focus on them too much. The right clothing pieces are right for a reason.

  • Identify your best features and wear clothes that highlight them. If you succeed, then that fashion item is right for you.
  • If the clothes don't look great on you, consider the fit. You might just need to get a size bigger to make them work.
  • Know your silhouette and the fabrics, shapes, and styles that go best with it. A curvy silhouette, for example, will look amazing with fabrics that drape.

Not everyone has great fashion sense or even an eye for fashion. But if you really want to, you can develop skills to dress well and look your best on any occasion and with all sorts of fashion items. If business casual is the style you want to master first, start with a polo shirt or two from Tommy Hilfiger AU.
