Welcome the new season by decorating a couch for fall. It’s a quick and easy project that can make a big impact by bringing beautiful color and warming texture to a living room so it’s welcoming as well as elegant.

Fall decor ideas can create seasonal style all around a home – and to its exterior. And it’s worth including the couch in your plans since it’s a focal point of the living space in which family and friends gather.

These are the couch decorating strategies interior designers recommend for a cozy feel along with a chic look this fall.

Stylish ways to decorate a couch for fall

Whether you focus on the couch alone or transform it as part of living room fall decor ideas, your project will elevate the space and celebrate the best of the season.

Focus on the color, fabric type, and texture to give it autumn style. When to start decorating for fall, including transforming the look of your couch? That might be from the official September 23rd beginning, or when the weather changes, as feels right for you.

1. Reflect nature’s palette

Let nature inspire fall color schemes, including when your focus is on decorating the couch. ‘Pillows and throws are a great, low-risk opportunity to go bold in your interiors,’ says Dan Mazzarini, principal and creative director of BHDM Design and ARCHIVE by Dan Mazzarini.

‘With its relatively low cost, this is not the place to be careful! I say go for striking colors and patterns. Match the colors you see in nature for inspiration and swap your pillowcases seasonally. For fall, we love merlots, forest greens and rich grays.’

2. Make it moody

Try a combination that draws on the season’s light as well as other elements for a couch: honey and gilded bronze, advises interior designer Artem Kropovinsky. ‘The rich shade of honey paints a warm, welcoming mood of autumn, whereas gilded bronze infuses a sense of opulence,’ he says. ‘Together, they paint a scene of falling leaves, aglow in the late afternoon sun.’

3. Cozy up

Decor that signals how snug you’ll feel is perfect for the couch. ‘Fall is all about being warm and cozy, so I recommend adding throw pillows and a blanket draped over the couch for an inviting touch,’ says Jennifer Verruto, founder and CEO of Blythe Interiors.

‘By adding throw pillows, you can incorporate warm colors like amber, mustard, mint or sage green, or even ivory and black, that bring an autumnal color palette to your existing decor. While normally one might hide blankets in storage when not in use, during the chilly months I recommend adding a decorative throw draped over the back of the couch or thrown over the arm rest for a cozy touch.’

Artem Kropovinsky likes to use blankets, too. ‘Strategically placing a blanket, particularly those with edge details like fringes, adds layers to a seating arrangement,’ he says. ‘Opt for lavish materials like cashmere or intricate wool weaves for an opulent touch.’

4. Select warm colors

Think of the tones of fall foliage for the couch. ‘I love to infuse a touch of autumn to elevate my clients’ interiors through seasonal hues,’ says Madison Popper, founder of the global interior design firm Chill Casa. ‘Embracing the fall aesthetic, I artfully drape couches with a rich tapestry of brown, beige, orange, and fiery red tones, invoking the warmth of the season.’

5. Combine rich shades with neutrals

Couch decorating can bring in neutral shades alongside more powerful hues. ‘You want to look for rich colors and tones such as browns and forest greens and burnt oranges,’ says interior designer Chantelle Hartman Malarkey. ‘Complementing these colors with ivory and cream is a nice combo as well. You can incorporate these colors in blankets and throw pillows.’

7. Focus on fabrics

While color’s crucial when giving a couch a makeover for fall, pay atttention to the fabrics themselves to make it feel warm and inviting. ‘As far as fabrics go I recommend velvets, thick and cozy materials or a good plaid,’ says Chantelle Hartman Malarkey.

‘I also love a thick oversized braided blanket! So perfect for the fall and extremely comfortable.’

8. Choose sculpted cushions

To elevate the room affordably when you are decorating for fall, opt for sculpted cushions. ‘Textures like velvet or chenille interact uniquely with light, offering a hint of extravagance to a sofa,’ says Artem Kropovinsky. ‘Mix and match both plain and design-centric cushions, weaving in fall symbols and abstract designs.

‘Position these in any restful spot,’ he continues. ‘Be it the main lounge or a snug corner, sculpted cushions uplift the aura immediately.’
