How do we deal with overhanging trees in our garden?

My neighbour’s pear tree is encroaching my small garden, blocking out the sun. I also wonder how big the roots are as it’s close to our house. He’s a tricky character and we don’t get on. Do I reason with him or just hack back branches? What are my rights?
