How do people in Castle Douglas cope with the high temperatures in the summer?

t was taps aff weather in the Stewartry last week.

The area was basking in a heatwave with temperatures pushing close to – and possibly over in some places – 30 degrees.

And as if the scorching heat didn’t make it difficult enough to sleep, thunder and lightning in the middle of the night helped make things even worse.

But not too many folk were complaining as they headed for the beach or nipped out to the shops to enjoy an ice cream.

However, in such conditions it’s important to take precautions to make sure you don’t suffer sunburn or anything worse.

So, on the hottest day of the year so far, we headed to Castle Douglas to find out what tips people had to cope with the soaring temperatures.

James Anderson. (Drew Geddes)

James Anderson, who lives in King Street, had a simple solution “A big pint of heavy! You need to drink plenty – water, alcohol or both.”

He added: “I wear my boiler suit for work so it doesn’t matter to me whether it’s summer or winter, it’s all the same.”

Eric Paterson. (Drew Geddes)

Eric Paterson, from Airdrie, was giving his puppy Bracken a welcome drink and had some advice for other pet owners.

He said: “You need a sports top bottle of water, that’s best for him. He’s just a puppy, he’s only 18 weeks, and I don’t leave him in the car, absolutely not.

“If you’re out with animals take plenty of water and make sure you have plenty of breaks to take a cup of tea or a drink of water. Try to keep hydrated. You have to wear shorts to keep cool and try to keep in the shade. I’m a cancer sufferer so stay out of the shade as much as I can.”

Natalie Dodds. (Drew Geddes)

Natalie Dodds, from Castle Douglas, was making sure her daughter was well protected. She said: “I keep her out of the midday sun and give her plenty of water. I spend half my days putting suncream on!”

Linda Whitelaw, also from Castle Douglas, added: “Drink plenty, keep in the shade and don’t do too much exercise. We need to make the most of it as it won’t last for long.”
