How do I get out of work to attend a job interview?

On Friday and Monday we publish the problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Guardian Money supplement, so readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy's own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?

What is the normal thing to do when one needs time off (perhaps an hour or two) from one job to secretly attend an interview for another? I suspect I'm meant to disclose why I am away, but is it socially acceptable to say "I have an appointment?" Of course I can't say I am going for an interview with no security of getting it. I hate lying but needs must ... surely? What do other people do?

• For Jeremy's and readers' advice on a work issue, send a brief email to dear.jeremy@guardian.co.uk. Please note that he is unable to answer questions of a legal nature or reply personally.
