How Did Kristi Noem React To Husband Byron's Cross-Dressing Scandal?

Kristi Noem has said she is 'devastated' in Washington after reports emerged that her husband, Byron Noem, allegedly led a secret online life in which he cross‑dressed and paid fetish models, a scandal that has left many asking how a former Secretary of Homeland Security could have been unaware of such activity while serving in one of the most sensitive posts in Donald Trump's administration.

Kristi Noem 'Devastated' And 'Blindsided' By Byron's Secret Life

The story broke just weeks after Noem was removed from her cabinet role and reassigned as a special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, and against a background of long‑running rumours about an alleged affair with Trump ally Corey Lewandowski.

Noem herself has not given an on‑camera interview about the scandal. Instead, her reaction has been relayed through a short written statement from her representatives.

'Ms Noem is devastated. The family was blindsided by this, and they ask for privacy and prayers at the time,' a spokesperson said, in comments reported by both the New York Post and other publications.

Social media users have openly questioned how a Homeland Security chief, with responsibility for some of the most sensitive intelligence in the US government, could have been unaware of behaviour that appears to have left her husband vulnerable to potential pressure or blackmail.

Inside The Allegations About Byron Noem's Online Double Life

The core of the scandal rests on the Daily Mail's reporting. The outlet says it reviewed 'hundreds' of messages allegedly exchanged between Byron Noem and three women involved in a niche 'bimbofication' fetish scene, where adult performers use large volumes of saline to attain a hyper‑exaggerated, 'Barbie doll' look.

According to the newspaper, the women said Noem's husband complimented their surgically enhanced bodies and told them he wanted 'huge, huge ridiculous boobs' for himself.

One image he is said to have sent shows him wearing pink hot pants and a flesh‑coloured, skin‑tight top, apparently with balloons stuffed under his shirt to mimic oversized, uneven breasts, complete with artificial protruding nipples.

The report claims Noem paid substantial sums to sex workers and fetish models through services such as Cash App and PayPal, allegedly sending at least $25,000 (£18,769) in total. In one exchange, he is said to have asked a model to turn him 'into a girl' and then asked whether he should wear leggings.

The Daily Mail also says it checked whether the photos at the centre of the story were faked or generated by artificial intelligence. Its tests reportedly came back negative, and Byron did not deny cross‑dressing or participating in paid chats when approached, according to the outlet. He did, however, tell the paper that he had never disclosed any sensitive information about his wife.

An Axios reporter, Marc Caputo, said he had received a lead but had been unable to secure an interview with the accuser. He described what he had been told about the alleged source of the leak.

'They said an immigrant sex worker, possibly in the country illegally, wanted to go public about Noem's husband using her services online – it was vengeance for DHS's immigration enforcement,' Caputo said.

Byron Noem's Scandal Sparks Security Fears, Public Mockery

According to the report, what particularly alarms security experts is how little effort Byron appears to have made to obscure his identity. He is said to have given women a phone number linked to a voicemail that identified his business, making it relatively straightforward to connect him to Kristi Noem and to the Trump administration.

Former CIA officer Marc Polymeropoulos told the Daily Mail, 'If a media organization can find this out, you can assume with a high degree of confidence that a hostile intelligence service knows this as well.'

Conservative host Megyn Kelly mocked the entire episode by invoking another of Noem's controversies. 'I'm glad Cricket doesn't have to see this,' she said, referring to the dog Kristi Noem admitted shooting after declaring it unruly and dangerous.

Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace, by contrast, tried to shift the focus away from the salacious details. 'The media wants to talk about Bryon and Kristi Noem's personal drama and indiscretions. I want to talk about who is getting deported, who got paid, and who's stealing from taxpayers. Different priorities. Let's focus on what matters,' she wrote.

Even President Donald Trump has been drawn into the story. In an interview with the Daily Mail, the president was asked directly about the allegations that Byron had sent cross‑dressing photos to women on an adult website.

'They confirmed it? Wow, well, I feel badly for the family if that's the case, that's too bad,' he said, before adding that he had not seen the material himself. 'I haven't seen anything. I don't know anything about it. That's too bad, but I just know nothing about it.'

Earlier this month, Noem's wife, Kristi, was relieved of her duties as Secretary of Homeland Security and assigned a new position as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas. Markwayne Mullin was sworn in as her replacement on 24 March.

Byron and Kristi Noem have been married for about three decades and share three grown children: daughters Kassidy, 31, and Kennedy, 29, and son Booker, 23. The couple owns Noem Insurance in South Dakota.
