How did Aiden McGeady fare on his return to the Sunderland lineup?

New Sunderland manager Lee Johnson wasted no time in putting stamp on the Back Cats starting line-up.

He made four changes from the draw with Burton Albion in midweek - bringing back Aiden McGeady in from the cold.

The former Republic of Ireland international made his first start for the Black Cats in 13 months and was included in the starting line-up in place of academy graduate Elliot Embleton.

It may have been harsh to drop Embleton who didn't put a foot wrong against the Brewers - albeit he didn't create much either.

McGeady created Sunderland's best chances of the game and arguably should have scored.

The 'Tics took the lead through Kyle Joseph and should have levelled minutes later.

McGeady found himself in space on the left hand side of the visitors box - he drove towards goal but could only direct his shot into the side netting.

The former Republic of Ireland international went close again in the second half.

He shifted the ball onto his left foot and fired a rasping shot towards the top left hand corner of Jones' goal but he managed to tip it over the bar.

It's too much to ask one player to change the whole dynamic of a side who are low on confidence and playing no where near their best.

While still no where near his best - which is understandable after so long without a serious run in the side, McGeady showed glimpses still of what he's capable of.

Some neat touches here and there created space for others to advance forward, but like the majority of this season - the Black Cats final ball let them down.

Hopefully he's given a run in the side from now on as he was still head and shoulders the Black Cats most creative player this afternoon.
