How Dan James' reported Leeds United transfer fee compares to Premier League's big money moves

This summer over £1 billion has been spent by Premier League clubs in the transfer market.

Those same 20 clubs have recouped around £500 million in return for selling those deemed expendable.

Leeds United meanwhile appear on the cusp of signing Welsh international Daniel James on deadline day, as various reports claim the 23-year-old is undergoing a medical with a fee supposedly agreed.

That sum is believed to be £25 million with significant add-ons, as per The Athletic, a fee which many supporters believe is a touch higher than anticipated.

Nevertheless, Leeds seem to have successfully deterred various other Premier League clubs who held an interest in the player, once it became apparent late in the window that James would be available.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Old Trafford return has paved the way for James' departure, with the 36-year-old Portuguese international expected to hoover up the Leeds-bound winger's minutes.

LeedsLive have assessed how Dan James' purported transfer fee compares to other high-profile, big-money moves and those which are somewhat comparable in nature.

Tammy Abraham - 23 years old - Chelsea to AS Roma - £36 million

Ex-Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has signed a five-year contract with Italian giants AS Roma this summer, departing Stamford Bridge after a difficult period under Thomas Tuchel.

Following the German's appointment as head coach, Abraham had been somewhat ostracised from the starting line-up, starved of first-team minutes.

Abraham is - like James - 23 years old, and something of a project buy for the Serie A club now managed by Jose Mourinho.

His fee is roughly £10 million higher than the sum which is expected to secure James' signature at Elland Road, although Abraham's Premier League pedigree is perhaps a tad more convincing.

Emiliano Buendia - 24 years old - Norwich City to Aston Villa - £35 million

Nominally playing the same position as James, new Aston Villa signing Emi Buendia has hit the ground running at Villa Park and once again cost approximately £10 million more than the Welshman.

Villa finished below Leeds in the Premier League table last term and have completed a throng of £30 million signings this summer following Jack Grealish's £100 million departure.

It seems this is the going rate for players who will likely slot straight into the starting XI of mid-table Premier League sides - despite suggestions Leeds may well have overpaid.

Martin Odegaard - 22 years old - Real Madrid to Arsenal - £32 million

Speaking of the going rate, Martin Odegaard's permanent switch to the Emirates Stadium this summer is another which cost in the region of £30 million.

The Norwegian is one year James' junior and by all accounts arrives with the allure of a player who was once dubbed a 'wonderkid', provoking Real Madrid to sign him from Stromsgodset in 2015.

Despite his relative fall from grace over the past eight months, Arsenal still shelled out upwards of £30 million for his services.

Joe Willock - 22 years old - Arsenal to Newcastle United - £26 million

Leaving Arsenal this summer has been Joe Willock, who after a successful loan spell at St James' Park put pen to paper on a permanent switch to the North East.

Willock has typically been a bit-part player at Arsenal throughout his career, and a seven goals-in-seven games stint for Newcastle towards the end of last season has prompted Steve Bruce's side to part with a sizeable sum for the transitional midfielder.

While Willock suits the brand of football currently on display at Newcastle, he doesn't quite have the same international pedigree as James, despite having played a similar number of Premier League matches.

All told, this move again reaffirms the notion that Leeds are reportedly paying a fee which could largely be considered market value for a young attacking player with potential to develop further.
