How Crystal Palace made VAR history during FA Cup third round clash against Derby County

Crystal Palace were involved in VAR history during their FA Cup third-round clash with Derby County.

Chris Martin's first-half goal put the Championship side 1-0 at the break, with the Eagles furiously attempting to avoid being dumped out of the competition by lower-league opposition.

However, the game could be remembered for a first in VAR history, as Michael Oliver sent off Luka Milivojevic with the assistance of the on-field monitor during the second half.

The Crystal Palace number four clashed with Tom Huddlestone on the floor after a challenge between the pair, which Oliver responded to by showing both a yellow card.

However, as a VAR check took place to check for violent conduct and a possible red card, Oliver went to review the decision himself using the on-field monitor, for the first time this season.

Having reviewed the footage, Oliver took the correct decision to send of Milivojevic after replays showed he had kicked out at Huddlestone when the pair tangled.

Previously, referees had avoided using the on-field monitor under instruction from Premier League referee chief, Mike Riley, who is concerned that their use would add too much delay to decisions.

However, with the FA Cup out of his control, Oliver made history by becoming the first referee to use the on-field monitor this season, since VAR was permanently introduced into the English game in the Premier League.

Whilst VAR was being trialled in previous seasons, referees often used the on-field monitors, however, that hasn't been the case in Premier League matches.
