How Cristiano Ronaldo has set an example to Manchester United's youngsters

By George Smith

Manchester United Under-23s player-coach Paul McShane has identified the benefits the club's younger players will gain from being able to train alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner — who netted a hat-trick in Portugal's 5-0 win over Luxembourg on Tuesday evening — returned to Old Trafford on the final day of the summer transfer window from Juventus, in a move that was expected to seriously bolster United's attack.

Ronaldo has enjoyed a solid start to life back in England so far, scoring five goals in his first six appearances, including three in the Premier League.

While his main purpose for returning to United is to help the club challenge for trophies once again, McShane — who also returned to United during the summer — has hinted at just how much the club's youngsters are learning from training alongside one of the greatest players of all-time.

McShane told Sky Sports : "I think I have had about 20 people asking me for signed Ronaldo jerseys, so it has been good.

"I think he is the greatest player in the world and for him to come back here has been amazing.

"The young lads, when they go and train with him, they can see the intensity in him and the winner. He is world class in everything that he does.

"I was here when he first came to the club and how he worked every day I have seen it first hand, such as when he was building himself up in the gym and doing extra sprints up hills after training and stuff. He was going to the very top, no matter what, and I think he shows the mentality that is needed to make it where he has made it."

Despite being 36, Ronaldo continues to break record after record, highlighting that hard work and dedication shown as a youngster can go a very long way in shaping any player's future.
