How Cristiano Ronaldo and Roger Federer are helping a Manchester United star

Former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo and tennis great Roger Federer have been named as sporting inspirations by Scott McTominay.

The United midfielder, who has made 15 appearances for the club this season, praised Ronaldo's high standards and determination to push himself to new goals every season.

But McTominay's chief sporting inspiration is 20-time Grand Slam winner Federer. The 22-year-old is a big tennis fan and is amazed at Federer's longevity and ability to avoid injury in what is a taxing sport.

"Someone who has been at the top for so many years is Roger Federer," McTominay told Inside United.

"I like my tennis. I don’t really get much chance to play because it’s quite hard to play and there’s lots of twisting and turning, and you don’t want to get injured.

How Sir Alex Ferguson's approach at Manchester United is helping England

"I always watch Wimbledon, and the other major championships as well. I’ve never been but it’s certainly on the bucket list."

McTominay has a footballing inspiration as well, and it's one that will go down well around Old Trafford.

"Football-related I’d say Cristiano Ronaldo ," he said. "He just keeps his standards so high every year and he’s always achieving new goals and new heights, and just keeping it going."
