Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo for adding to the club's history of scoring late goals.
The Reds needed their summer signing to bail them out on Wednesday in the Champions League, as they eventually overcame Villarreal 2-1.
Paco Alcacer had given the visitors the lead before Alex Telles scored a thunderous equaliser for United. During the contest, goalkeeper David De Gea also had to be on hand to make a number of crucial stops.
But with the match drawing towards a conclusion, Ronaldo latched on to a layoff from Jesse Lingard and netted a 95th-minute winner for his team.
Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand praised the forward for consistently stepping up at vital moments for his team.
"When you need a goal, need a moment to galvanise the squad, galvanise the stadium, the fanbase - Cristiano Ronaldo steps up.
"He enjoys the responsibility, he wants to be the guy the chances falls to. This guy, his goal record says it all. He's there for the big moments and today again, last minute again this is something Manchester United has been written in the history books for years and years and years. And he's a big part of that too.
"...You have to enjoy these players. [Lionel] Messi scores last night and obviously tonight Ronaldo says 'no, I'm going to come back tonight and score one' just like the old days."
Ronaldo has enjoyed an excellent start to life back at Old Trafford since signing from Juventus in the summer, with five goals scored in as many games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's side.
It was a win that will alleviate some pressure on the manager too, as United had come into the game having lost three of their last four matches in all competitions.
Former England international Peter Crouch was on the same programme as Ferdinand and said Solskjaer will be thankful for the forward's late heroics.
"He's got his manager out of jail a little bit today I think," said Crouch. "He's been bought for the big moments and that was a big moment. You can tell by Solskjaer's celebration it was a get out of jail free card a little bit. It fell to the right man, it was an unbelievable finish but United didn't play well today."
