How Covid lockdown wrecked a Rajasthan village's economy

In Dausa, an hour's drive from Rajasthan's capital Jaipur, Khadi manufacturing units are reeling the economic hit of the pandemic. A sharp slump in sales means these units, which together employ nearly 2,000 families, may not even survive if the situation doesn't improve or the government step in.

At Balaheri village, Dausa, a community of 50 artisans is struggling to make ends meet because there are barely any orders for the brassware they make. In Naya Katla market, retailers say they have been incurring losses of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh on a daily basis during the pandemic.

It's despair all around.
