How Karius, Coutinho, Can and the Liverpool players sold by Jurgen Klopp fared in 2018/19

2018/19 was the season that Liverpool went from also-rans to contenders - and could still end as champions of Europe. Again.

Jurgen Klopp transformed his top four side into genuine title challengers, as well as being a major force in Europe's top competition.

Liverpool's immense progress has been underpinned by some excellent work in the transfer market. Klopp, Michael Edwards and the rest of the recruitment team identified areas of improvement and spent big in order to ensure they got it right.

Klopp and Liverpool showed their ambition in the summer, breaking the world record for a goalkeeper in Alisson back in July - just seven months after the Reds paid Southampton £75m for Virgil van Dijk .

But it wasn't just the incomings that caught the headlines. Liverpool weren't afraid to make bold decisions when it came to selling players, getting £145m from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho and allowing Emre Can to run his contract down and move on a free to Juventus.

Loris Karius was also moved on just months after his mistakes in the Champions League final.

But how have they fared?

Philippe Coutinho

What happened? Brazilian attacker Philippe Coutinho decided that after four years at Anfield, enough was enough. He wanted out and he wanted a dream move to Barcelona. The saga, and yes we think this one qualifies as a saga, all started in the summer of 2017, with the Reds rejecting three bids from the Catalan giants and a transfer request from Coutinho.

But after spending six more months at Anfield he'd get his move to the Camp Nou, with Barcelona forced to pay an eye-watering £145m and Michael Edwards even managed to negotiate a £100m surcharge if they try to buy another Reds player before 2020.

Did it work out for Liverpool? In a word, yes. Liverpool have developed as a unit since Coutinho's departure, improving both domestically and in Europe. Liverpool have missed the little Brazilian's individual magic at times, but Klopp's side have no doubt got better in his absence.

Did it work out for Coutinho? In a word, no. Coutinho struggled at first, failing to establish himself as an automatic pick in Ernesto Valverde's midfield. But he enjoyed a resurgence of sorts, scoring as Barcelona knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League, but was anonymous in both legs against his former club and hauled off after an hour at Anfield.

He sat out Barca's final match of La Liga season on Sunday through injury.

All in all, it hasn't been great for Coutinho.

Loris Karius

What happened? Kiev. We'll say no more than that. Loris Karius would then depart to Besiktas on a two-year loan deal with the Turkish club obligated to buy the German if certain criteria is met.

Did it work out for Liverpool? 100 percent. See Danny Ward.

Liverpool to support Loris Karius' Besiktas complaint after being left baffled by stinging goalkeeper criticism

Did it work out for Karius? At first, no. Karius continued to struggle at Besiktas, making a number of high profile mistakes and being criticised by his own manager. Liverpool to support Loris Karius' Besiktas complaint after being left baffled by stinging goalkeeper criticism .

But recent weeks have seen an upturn in form - and popularity - for the German. He's now said to be keen on staying in Turkey when the two-year loan ends.

Besiktas will end their season on Sunday with a home match against Kasimpasa needing only a point to guarantee Europa League group stage football next season.

Emre Can

What happened? Emre Can refused to sign a new contract at Liverpool and the Reds played it cool, letting the German midfielder leave on a free for Juventus at the end of the season.

Did it work out for Liverpool? Emre Can's name has barely been mentioned on Merseyside since his departure, and with Liverpool spending big on Fabinho and Naby Keita, he doesn't appear to have been missed at all.

Did it work out for Can? Like Coutinho, the German midfielder appeared to struggle in his early days with Juventus, but became a more regular member of their team as The Old Lady romped to a Serie A title. He scored four times in 37 appearances throughout the campaign - ended with a title winner's medal, but won't be in the Champions League final again.

Emre Can, Fabinho and why Liverpool's big summer transfer decision has been truly vindicated

Mamadou Sakho

What happened? After a year out on loan with Crystal Palace, the South London club finally made Mamadou Sakho's move permanent, paying £26m for his services.

Did it work out for Liverpool? Absolutely. The Reds pocketed £26m for Sakho's services and currently boast the best defensive record in the Premier League.

Did it work out for Sakho? Yes. The Frenchman is a regular starter for Roy Hodgson's side, recently returned to the national set-up and Palace confirmed their Premier League status. So everyone's happy.

Danny Ward

What happened? It looked for a moment in the summer that Danny Ward would get his chance at Liverpool, but then the Reds signed Alisson from Roma and the Welshman was sold to Leicester City.

Did it work out for Liverpool? Another complete success for the Reds. Alisson has been excellent since arriving at Anfield and Liverpool banked around £13m for Ward.

What happened to Brendan Rodgers' 33 signings at Liverpool

Did it work out for Ward? Not exactly. The Welshman has swapped being out of the squad at Liverpool for being on the bench at Leicester, with Kasper Schmeichel remaining the Foxes' number one. Old boss Brendan Rodgers has not, as of yet, restored him to the starting line up.

Danny Ings

What happened? Liverpool allowed Danny Ings to joined Southampton on a loan deal late in the summer transfer window, with the Reds guaranteed a £20m fee for the striker's services.

Did it work out for Liverpool? Another success. Daniel Sturridge has stepped up to become a handy reserve for Liverpool again and the Reds' front three continued to fire. No dramas.

The rise and fall of Danny Ings' Liverpool career - a transfer that just wasn't meant to be

Did it work out for Ings? He started like a house of fire, scoring seven goals in 13 games. Injuries have hampered his progress and his last goal came before Christmas in a win at Huddersfield.

Ragnar Klavan

What happened? Liverpool allowed Estonian defender Ragnar Klavan to join Cagliari for £2m in the summer after two years of service.

Did it work out for Liverpool? Yes. Joe Gomez emerged as a first-choice partner for Virgil van Dijk and with both Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as other options, as well as young duo Conor Masterson and Nat Phillips, Jurgen Klopp is well stocked in centre-halves.

Did it work out for Klavan? Not yet. Klavan has been plagued with an Achilles injury all season, but did return for Cagliari's final two matches of the season against Lazio and Genoa as the Sardinians retained their Serie A status. And Sardinia is a lovely place.

Others to depart such as Jon Flanagan to Rangers and Jordan Williams to Rochdale have enjoyed mixed success, and Liverpool have also loaned out the likes of Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent, Ben Woodburn, Sheyi Ojo and Ovie Ejaria. Nathaniel Clyne and Dominic Solanke have also departed the club to mixed fortunes.
