How coronavirus cases in Merseyside have leapt in the past month

The number of coronavirus cases across Merseyside have risen by more than 4,000 in the past month alone.

Back on March 24 there were just 93 cases in hospitals across Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and Halton.

The latest figures for April 24 show that number has climbed since then to stand at 4,178.

That relentless rise can be seen using the Liverpool Echo's coronavirus tracker, a graph showing how the number of cases have increased in each local authority area.

You can click here to explore the interactive coronavirus graph and see how many cases have been confirmed near you.

Liverpool has seen the biggest rise, with 1,257 cases to date, compared to just 41 one month ago.

Wirral has 877 confirmed cases, up from 15 while Sefton has 724 - an extra 711 from the same day in March.

Knowsley had just eight cases on March 24, as did Halton and St Helens.

Now Knowsley has 471, Halton has 293 and St Helens has 556.

The confirmed case numbers come with a significant caveat - with testing largely limited to hospitals, the true number of infections across the region will be far higher.

There have also been 278 deaths from coronavirus in Merseyside's hospitals to date.
