How Conor McGregor's Twitter outburst cost him a Khabib Nurmagomedov rematch

Conor McGregor was in line for a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov until he opened his mouth on social media.

The Irishman was choked out by the lightweight king two years ago and has been plotting a rematch since the UFC 229 loss, Mirror UK reports.

But his 40-second victory over Donald Cerrone in January looked set to be enough to earn the title shot against the Russian, assuming he gets over the challenge of Justin Gaethje later this month.

UFC president Dana White was planning to relaunch his reality show The Ultimate Fighter with McGregor and Nurmagomedov as opposing captains with the rivals then fighting next year.

But when McGregor took to social media to leak his private messages with White, Nurmagomedov had a change of heart.

"[Khabib] was gonna do it until Conor did all this s***," White told Barstool Sports. "That’s what I was saying. I felt like I was in a good place and we were going to get that done.

"We were going to do The Ultimate Fighter on ESPN and f***ing do the rematch but Conor blew that.

"Yeah, Khabib said f*** him; that was it."

McGregor's future remains up in the air after he claimed last weekend that he and Manny Pacquiao are due to fight later this year or early in 2021.

And also, McGregor appears to have agreed a fight in Dublin for the first time since 2014 and will take on Dustin Poirier in a charity exhibition this December.

McGregor tweeted a promotional poster for the clash this evening and revealed it will be held on December 12 in his hometown.

The 32-year-old last fought American Poirier six years ago, defeating him in Las Vegas by first-round TKO.

McGregor reached out to his former rival on Twitter on Monday night and, having received a positive response, appears to have sealed a deal to make the clash happen.

"Hey bro! You want to do an MMA charity fight?" he wrote. "Zero to do with the UFC; I will donate half a mill towards your charity for it.

"Sell it on PPV or work a TV deal and we work out other charities that are close to my heart also. I am engaged in many. Strictly a charity 'exhibition'.

"December 12th in the Point Depot, Ireland. No weigh ins.  Open weight, unified rules. I will arrange all travel fare for you and family."
