How Chris Wilder sees the promotion fight with Leeds United after Sheffield United slip-up

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has warned there will be more twists and turns to come in the battle for promotion after Leeds United moved above the Blades yesterday.

The Whites’ dramatic 3-2 win over Millwall, coupled with a defeat for the Blades by the same scoreline, lifted Marcelo Bielsa’s side two points clear of their Yorkshire rivals, with seven games to go.

It was a first defeat in 11 games for the Bramall Lane outfit, who had been dubbed as favourites for promotion after their 1-0 win at Elland Road just before the international break.

However, Wilder believes there are plenty of shocks still to come, and nothing is decided in the race for the Premier League.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, he said: "When we walked off the pitch at Elland Road, people said we saying all sorts like ‘it’s yours to lose’, but there were an awful lot of games to go with good sides to play.

"It’s so disrespectful to the division, disrespectful to Bristol City, Preston [North End], all the teams we have got to play.

“It’s our second season in this division, we’ve got a fantastic opportunity of turning in a fantastic season to a remarkable season. That’s what it will be if we can get out the division.

“Maybe people will look today and changed their attitude on us. It’s changed before and it will again. I don’t really give a monkeys about that."

Prior to yesterday’s encounter, the Blades had managed a run of 10-and-a-half hours without conceding. Andreas Weimann’s hat-trick ensured that run came to an end, boosting the Robins' hopes of reaching the top six.

Despite the defeat, Wilder was still pleased with his side’s efforts against a tough Bristol City side.

“We lost a very tight game of football, so I’m not embarrassed to lose. They were three poor goals from our point of view when we’ve defended every so well for a long period of time,” he said.

"We have played a really good side and we were not at our best, especially in the first half. It is no disgrace in losing a game of football from where we have come from and where we are now.

“We’re not a streaky team, win four, lose four, which is a fantastic quality to have. You don’t get to second or third in the division by playing in that way.

"We’ll head to Preston with 6,000 fans behind one goal and we’ll have a good week. There’s a lot of football still to be played.”
