How Chelsea will be affected if the Premier League season is cancelled

The future of the Premier League is up in the air after the recent decision to suspend the current season until at least April 4.

After the emergency meeting on Friday morning, the league are set to hold another one next Thursday, following Uefa's own stakeholder meeting on Tuesday (March 17).

There have been many thoughts on what could happen.

One option is that Euro 2020 is pushed back a year, meaning that the domestic leagues around Europe would have extra time to complete the 2020/21 campaign.

Coronavirus: WHO says Europe now 'the epicentre of the pandemic'

However, with no real timeline on how long the coronavirus might affect the world, there has been another option put forward that the current season will be cancelled.

FA chairman Greg Clarke has also reportedly told the Premier League that he does not believe that the domestic football season will be completed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to The Times , Clarke said he did not think it was "feasible" that the season would be completed, with government guidance suggesting that the coronavirus will not peak in the UK until around mid-June.

The legal implications and financial impact it would have on the Premier League, clubs, EFL and businesses would be huge, but it might be seen as the only reasonable option.

So what would that mean for positions and how would it affect Chelsea for the 2020/21 campaign?

At the moment, the Blues are in a great league position, meaning if the competition finishes right now, then Chelsea would have a Champions League place.

If this season is completely 'null and void', then once again the Blues would remain in a Champions League place, with last season's positions being carried over.

Chelsea's first team and coaching staff are currently in self isolation after Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for coronavirus.

However, the winger posted on social media to say that he has recovered and is just getting himself back to full health in an attempt to return soon.

Thursday is set to be another big day in the future of the Premier League and what the future of football in England will look like.
