Chelsea transfer ban upheld: How it affects Christian Pulisic, Gonzalo Higuain & Mateo Kovacic

Chelsea's two-window transfer ban has been upheld by FIFA.

The Blues decided to appeal the decision to stop them registering any new players for the next two transfer windows, but the Appeals Committee has upheld the original decision.

That means the west London outfit won't be allowed to register any new players until the summer of 2020, although they can still go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, as a number of clubs have done before them.

The Blues did complete two deals in the January window - Christian Pulisic and Gonzalo Higuain - whilst planning for the 2019/2020 campaign. But what does this transfer ban mean for their futures as well as on loan midfielder Mateo Kovacic?

We take a look.

Chelsea transfer ban appeal decision reached as FIFA make final ruling

What Chelsea's transfer ban means for Christian Pulisic

Absolutely nothing. Chelsea signed the USA international during the January transfer window and then loaned him back to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the season.

Therefore he's already on the books at Stamford Bridge and won't be affected by the ban as he's a returning player.

It would have been a completely different scenario if the Blues had agreed a deal for the winger to go through when the summer transfer window opens. Luckily they were quick to swoop in for the talented forward.

Why Chelsea have been in no rush to appoint a new director of football

What Chelsea's transfer ban means for Gonzalo Higuain and Mateo Kovacic

Higuain has signed on loan until the end of the season and there's an option included for the loan to be extended through to the end of next season or for a permanent deal in the summer.

There's question marks over what would happen to the Argentine. Chelsea wouldn't be allowed to register him for the new campaign as per the rules regarding the ban, but does that mean he heads back to Juventus as a result?

It's not an 18-month loan deal which has been mooted, so technically Higuain's loan comes to an end at the end of the current campaign and the Blues would have the option as to whether they want to pursue it further.

But this would be a registration matter with FIFA rather than the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Mateo Kovavic's hopes of landing a permanent move to Stamford Bridge would also be in jeopardy given that the Blues also would not be able to register him so it seems he will be heading back to Real Madrid.
