How Chelsea players have reacted to Thomas Tuchel after private one to one meetings

Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell reckons Thomas Tuchel has already convinced his new players to buy-in to his philosophy after replacing Frank Lampard.

Having spoken to members of the Chelsea squad, Sidwell has revealed that Tuchel held one on one meetings with his new squad after replacing Frank Lampard.

Sidwell says Tuchel has provided clarity regarding his project and where various players fit into his plans.

And after a solid start with a 0-0 draw against Wolves and 2-0 win over Burnley, he reckons it is evident the majority of players have reacted positively and are on board.

Speaking on BT Sport before the Blues’ huge clash with Tottenham, Sidwell said: “He’s come in, he’s had one session then had the game against Wolves.

“I think that game would’ve been worth the equivalent of five or six sessions where he can see, tactically, looking at players, are they astute enough like me, because we know he’s tactically astute.

“Talking to a few players, he’s come in, he’s had one on ones with players already, took them to one side so there’s clarity in everyone’s role, everyone’s position.

“Players are buying into it. He’s going to be tactically more advanced than Frank’s been, that’s a given because of the experience he’s got.

“As long as everyone is buying into it, which has been evident in the two games so far, then he’s going to progress.”

Speaking ahead of the game, Tuchel explained his desire to create a “structure” to his side and talked up the need for a strong relationship with his players.

Tuchel said: “I'm German - so maybe it comes from there. I believe in a disciplined structure on the field, and in respect from everybody for his position.

“It’s like an orchestra. We have to follow a discipline, a speed, a style. Everybody should know where the other guy is.

“We need a good relationship between the players and me – so we trust each other. We have to take care of performance - that is crucial - and results will hopefully follow.

“They don’t follow all the time in football. It’s hardest to accept for a coach who wants to control and plan everything. But you have to accept that you cannot control the result.

“What the team needs is a glue to stick together, overcome obstacles, work for each other. You can only smell it on the sidelines. It’s hard to explain in statistics.”
