How Chelsea injury helped scupper Kasper Dolberg Celtic transfer

The transfer window is closed, and once the international break is over with, we can all go back to enjoying our club football without having to think about players moving in or out.

Celtic endured a chaotic end to the window following their surprise exit from the Champions League against Kairat Almaty.

Kelechi Iheanacho was drafted in as a free agent yesterday after the Scottish Premiership champions missed out on a couple of key striking targets after the sale of Adam Idah to Swansea.

One of those was Denmark internationalist Kasper Dolberg.

Anderlecht sought £10m for the frontman, who eventually moved to Ajax.

But there was another hidden factor, which we can now piece together, which contributed to Celtic missing out on him.

And it all started when Liam Delap sustained a hamstring injury during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday lunchtime.

Immediately, this appeared to put paid to Nicolas Jackson's move to Bayern Munich. It eventually went through, as he joined the German giants on loan.

Amid all of that turbulence, Marc Guiu returned to Chelsea from Sunderland as the Stamford Bridge side looked for cover in attack.

This ultimately saw Sunderland tap into the market, as they bought Brian Brobbey from Ajax for £17m.

As a result, Ajax then came calling for Anderlecht's Dolberg, as they were then in need of a replacement striker, and were willing to stump up the £10m required.

So, Celtic admitted defeat in the race to sign the experienced frontman, as they turned their attentions to David Datro Fofana, only for the Chelsea forward to pick a loan move to Charlton instead.
