How Championship standings look with Wigan Athletic points deduction and administration rules explained

Wigan Athletic have fallen into administration.

The Latics have been excellent since the Championship restart, and indeed since the start of the year, climbing to 14th in the table.

But they will now receive a points deduction at the end of the season, facing even greater issues off the field with the club in administration.

Here's what we know about the situation and how it could impact the Championship table.

The situation

The Latics are now in the hands of Begbies Traynor with Paul Stanley, Gerald Krasner and Dean Watson from the firm appointed as the joint administrators of the club.

Mr Stanley, North West regional managing partner of Begbies Traynor, said: "We understand that everybody connected with the club and the wider football world is seeking clarity on the future of Wigan Athletic.

"That's exactly what we are seeking to provide as we move through this process and we seek out interested parties to rescue this famous old club here in the region.

"It is a fast-moving situation and we will provide updates on key developments."

The rules

EFL rules say clubs who go into administration will receive a 12-point deduction and that has now been confirmed in Wigan’s case, but with a caveat that a deduction won’t take place just yet.

Regulation 12.3.5 of the EFL rulebook says: "For the avoidance of doubt, where a Club and/or Group Undertaking is subject to more than one of the procedures in Regulation 12.3.1 above during a process of compromising creditors (for example Administration followed by a Company Voluntary Arrangement), the Club shall only be deducted one set of 12 points, such deduction to apply with effect from the first Insolvency Event."

And following today’s news, the EFL have said: “As a result of Wigan Athletic confirming they have entered into administration, the Club will be subject to a 12-point deduction and, in accordance with EFL Regulations, the timing of the sporting sanction can only be determined once final league placings in the Championship are determined.

“If in the event the Club is relegated by virtue of their final position following the conclusion of the Championship season, then the deduction will apply in League One in 2020/21. “However, if the Club is not in the relegation places following the final game of season, the sanction will be then be applied to their season 2019/20 total and final league standings amended as appropriate.

“The EFL is awaiting formal notification from the Administrators and once the League has received this it will commence discussions with the relevant individuals with the aim of achieving a long-term future for the Club.”

How the Championship could look after points deduction

Wigan sit 14th in the Championship table, eight points clear of the drop zone.

But they would find themselves bottom if the points deduction was in place.

Effectively, they will need to finish 12 points or more clear of the drop to ensure the points deduction - should it come in at the end of the season - does not send them down.

Here's how the table would look if Wigan were without those 12 points.
