How Celtic's 'million wingers' have bitten the dust as Neil Lennon eyes new wide men

When Celtic were on the verge of signing Marian Shved in January last year, it's fair to say manager Brendan Rodgers wasn't overly enthusiastic.

The Irishman, who would leave for Leicester City just a few weeks later, didn't question the talent of the Ukrainian but wasn't sure his squad needed yet another wide man.

Rodgers said: "I can't say I know a great deal about him but what I have seen he is a talent and something that will probably benefit the club in the future.

"We've got about a million wingers and don't need another one but he's a talent and in the summer we'll probably lose wingers and he'll look to come in. It's an opportunity for the club to sign a young talented player but not one that will probably help us now.

"The club have been in contact with his representatives and he is a player for the future.

"I haven't seen a great deal of him to be honest, it is something that has come to the club through circumstance and he has been watched.

"I think that they will look to get the deal done on him and he will probably be out on loan."

It probably wasn't the welcome Shved was expecting from his new manager, and the youngster did indeed spend the rest of the season back at Karpaty Lviv. It was hard to disagree with Rodgers' point though.

At the time the Hoops could call on Scott Sinclair, James Forrest , Johnny Hayes, Mikey Johnston and Daniel Arzani. They would also sign Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah, two players who can play out wide, in January.

One year on though and the current Celtic boss, Neil Lennon , is singing a very different tune.

He said this week: "There won't be anything done today but we are hoping in the next few days that we might have one or two bodies in.

"We might be looking in the wide area (as well as a striker). There won't be too many, I don't think."

Gone are the days of the million wingers, with a huge turnover for Celtic in that area over the last 12 months.

Burke and Weah both returned to their parent clubs in the summer, while Scott Sinclair has left to join Preston North End.

Arzani has made a solitary appearance in a competitive Celtic game, against Dundee in October 2018, while Shved has seen just 35 minutes of action all season.

Indeed, Lennon's squad now looks rather bare in the wide areas, especially if Lewis Morgan completes a move to MLS expansion franchise Inter Miami.

Forrest and Johnston have both signed long-term contracts but they are the only real options available beyond the end of this season.

Mohamed Elyounoussi is on loan from Southampton and may not remain past the end of the season, and Hayes, who has been used more as a left-back by Lennon, is out of contract in the summer.

For whatever reason Shved doesn't appear to be in the manager's plans, at least not at this stage in his development.

Eyebrows may have been raised when Lennon intimated that he'd be looking to sign a winger this month, and a striker remains a greater priority, but there's no question that a lot has changed since Rodgers 'welcomed' Shved to Celtic Park.
