How Captain Sir Tom Moore captured the hearts of the nation

Captain Sir Tom Moore, who captured the nation’s hearts with his heroic efforts to raise money for the NHS, has died aged 100.

The second world war veteran, Captain Sir Tom Moore, became a household name after he raised almost £39m for the NHS during the coronavirus lockdown.

He won the nation’s heart last year by walking 100 laps of his garden in Bedfordshire before his 100th birthday to help raise the funds.

His goal of raising £1,000 by his 100th birthday was celebrated by Royal Air Force flypasts and a parade by the British Army.

Last July, he became Sir Tom when he was knighted as honorary colonel of the Army Foundation College for his work at Windsor Castle.

His story inspired so many people that led him to receive more than 150,000 birthday cards and went on to receive 1.5 million individual donations in support of his efforts for the NHS.

He also went on to break two Guinness World Records by becoming the oldest person to get a No 1 single in the UK charts with his cover of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in collaboration with Michael Ball and the NHS Voices of Care choir and for raising the most money for doing a solo charity walk.
