Q: We haven’t done anything to our kitchen for 10 years and it’s looking a bit tired. We have a limited budget, though, so what should we focus on?
A: Even if you don’t want to go for the total refurb, there’s still plenty you can do to your kitchen with a limited budget. Simply changing the cupboard doors can update the look dramatically – check out replacement or recycled ones, or upcycle the ones you’ve got by getting them professionally spray-painted.
The floor, because of its size, is also a transformative place to concentrate some money on; from funky vinyls and quality laminates to tiles and concrete, there’s a world of choice out there to suit all budgets.
One area where you may consider spending a good chunk of your budget, however, is the worktops. As they’re so visible, the update will be noticeable. To make the look contemporary, follow today’s trend for a mix of materials – zinc on one side and Corian on another, for example.
If you think you can stretch your budget a little further, you may think about upgrading your appliances, too. This way, you can ensure that you have the most energy-efficient goods in your kitchen, which will help bring the bills down over time.
Fridges, ovens and dishwashers are the obvious place to start. However, smaller items, such as kettles and toasters, which consume a lot of power, are also worth thinking about.
Finally, lighting is a wise place to spend money, and can produce stunning effects when properly planned. The latest dimmable LED under-shelf lighting and tape or strip lighting can add a subtle glow to the kitchen – and a touch of atmosphere – and is easy to retrofit*.
