How Built Square Homes Sets a New Standard By Rebuilding the Path to Homeownership For the Next Generation

Homeownership remains one of the most enduring symbols of independence in America, a tangible facet of the perennial "American Dream." Yet today, nearly two in three renters don't believe they could buy a home they want in the foreseeable future due to the rising affordability crisis. At Built Square Homes, founder Connor Walters is working to make that symbol attainable again by constructing durable, thoughtfully designed houses priced well below the prevailing market.

Operating in North Georgia near the Atlanta suburbs, Walters leads a construction and property development company focused on designing and building practical homes that balance structural integrity with attainable pricing. The company's current benchmark is ambitious as they are focused on building new construction homes starting in the low $330,000 region in an area where comparable builds often reach between $376,000 - $469,900

Walters believes the national housing shortage, estimated at 4.7 million homes, demands fresh thinking from builders. "There are currently over four million homes in America that need to be built," he says. "We are a business that's built on the idea of making homes accessible, while building the most structurally sound home possible, something that can last for a long time and give a homeowner real equity."

The approach is already taking shape in the field. Built Square Homes is currently constructing a three-bedroom, two-bath residence spanning over 1500 square feet. The property is being built for under $320,000 with the aim to bring in instant equity up to $25,000, while maintaining features often associated with higher-end construction. Two-by-six exterior walls, ZIP system wall sheathing, spray foam insulation, and thoughtful mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems (MEP's) are included with an aim to enhance durability and efficiency.

Walters highlights that the goal, ultimately, is to deliver homes that exceed baseline building requirements. "We believe that a starter home can be a forever home. We aim to build higher quality homes at the same square foot price as the market," he says.

Design plays a major role in keeping costs manageable without sacrificing quality. Walters notes that he personally spent extensive time refining the company's core home plans to ensure every mechanical, electrical, and plumbing component is arranged efficiently. The bathrooms are positioned close to each other to minimize excess piping, while also creating tightly insulated structures to reduce energy demands. In Walters' view, such intentional building can create a layout that limits material waste while maintaining performance.

As Walters explains, "All of our savings come from smart design and efficiency. We're not using lesser material, we're using less material where it makes sense." This resourcefulness is also found in the team behind every project. Walters believes that skilled subcontractors familiar with the plans enable work to progress quickly while maintaining craftsmanship.

"Having the right team is very important. You want people who know the plan and can get in and out without sacrificing quality," he says. From his perspective, familiarity, something he deems essential for responsible construction, can allow crews to complete jobs efficiently, keeping schedules tight and budgets predictable.

The company's business model also challenges existing profit structures within residential development. Walters maintains that sustainable housing solutions require transparency about actual building costs and margins. Keeping that intent in mind, Built Square Homes leverages overhead discipline and consistent timelines with an aim to demonstrate that lower prices can coexist with healthy business growth.

"If we do it on schedule, on budget, and on time, that just means we're really good at our job. Our business can still be profitable while giving homeowners a better opportunity," Walters explains. He points out that a well-priced home can place buyers in a stronger financial position from the start. "If someone stays in a house for five to ten years and its

value rises, that equity becomes a powerful opportunity," he notes. "Homeownership is the start of freedom, and that's the dream we're selling."

Although the long-term vision extends beyond Georgia, Built Square Homes plans to continue building homes in the Atlanta area, where Walters emphasizes that thoughtfully priced housing isn't largely accessible. Walters views the company's current projects as a proof of concept that could influence housing markets across the country.

"If we can do this here, we should be able to do it everywhere," he says. "Our goal is to build more homes that are readily available and thoughtfully priced for the average American."

At a time when rising prices have pushed ownership out of reach for many families, Built Square Homes is demonstrating that innovation in design, efficiency, pragmatic resourcefulness, and transparency can reinvent the possibilities of modern housing, restoring the lost promise of homeownership.
