How Bruno Fernandes has given Manchester United what they need

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is one of the best set-piece specialists he has seen.

Fernandes, 25, was influential in the second-half of United's 2-0 win at Chelsea; hitting the post from a free-kick and assisting Harry Maguire from a corner to secure an invaluable three points. United had not previously scored direct from a corner in the Premier League since Marcus Rashford converted at West Ham United in September 2018.

The £46.5million Fernandes was substituted in added time to a rapturous ovation from the United following and Solskjaer hailed the Portugal international as the 'conductor' in his side.

"He's a top player and he's a conductor," Solskjaer said. "He wants to get on the ball, he gives us many options n the ball. His set-piece delivery is top class, and he's one of the better ones I've seen.

"He was unfortunate he didn't score on his free-kick at the near post as well and Harry, of course, we know if he can get a run on the ball he's dangerous and he got that goal."

Maguire was arguably fortunate not to be expelled in the first-half after he appeared to kick out at the Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi. The Video Assistant Review checked the incident but did not advise referee Anthony Taylor to dismiss Maguire and Solskjaer downplayed the flashpoint.

"For me, I didn't think two seconds about it at all," Solskjaer added. "I think he was fouled, rolled over, [it] seems like Batshuayi was gonna land on top of him and he puts his leg out to protect himself.

"It hurts when you get hit there! But I think he's all right."

Odion Igahlo emerged in the dying embers and was denied a debut goal by Willy Caballero. "Happy for him that he got his debut," Solskjaer remarked. "Created a good chance, unfortunately didn't score but sure he'll get his goals."
