How Bristol Rovers have brought the best out of Jonson Clarke-Harris - and how Graham Coughlan convinced him to join from Coventry City

Graham Coughlan says Bristol Rovers' strikers are all bringing out the best in each other.

Jonson Clarke-Harris has been in lethal form for the Gas since joining from Coventry City on transfer deadline day in January, scoring nine goals in 11 league matches.

He has struck up an excellent partnership with Tom Nichols up front, and Rovers boss Coughlan believes his strikers are reaping the rewards of a mutually beneficial partnership.

"Jonson's brought goals, that's the obvious one," Coughlan said. "He's brought goals, he's brought presence, he flicks balls on - he's a great lad in the dressing room, the lads love him.

"He's bringing out the best in Liam Sercombe, Tom Nichols, Gavin Reilly and Alex Jakubiak. He's added competition but, look, from the first day I came in, I've had Nichols, Reilly, Jakubiak and they've come on leaps and bounds as well.

"They're all rubbing off on each other - Sercs is there as well - so we've got some talent.

Coventry City boss Mark Robins admits pitch concerns ahead of Bristol Rovers game

"We've got ability, we've got some good players and Jonson's just bringing the best out of them. He'll be the first to tell you he wouldn't be able to do that on his own, he wouldn't be able to score those goals on his own.

"The lads are playing their part, it's a real team effort, so fair play to them.

"He's a big lad, he's a challenging lad and he's a special lad, to be fair, I love him - not just on the pitch but off the pitch because he's got a massive, massive heart."

The Gas make the trip to Coventry this weekend as Clarke-Harris prepares to face his former club along with Abu Ogogo, who also joined from the Sky Blues on deadline day.

Speaking after Saturday's defeat to Luton Town, Coughlan revealed that he had been in contact with Clarke-Harris throughout deadline day, with the striker having also been in talks with Portsmouth and Sunderland.

Coughlan added: "He phoned me. I was stuck in the box in a 12, 13-hour day on deadline day.

"I was stuck in the box with Martyn Starnes, the CEO, and Tommy Widdrington, the head of football.

"I get on well with Jonno, he texts me, there was a couple of clubs interested in him and he was asking me for a little bit of advice and which way to turn.

"I kept steering him in our direction - lo and behold, at 5.50, the phone rings and he told me 'big man, I'm on my way down.'

"I said 'Jonno, you can't just jump in the car and come down, there's rules'.

"He said don't worry, he's coming down to play for me. It was as simple as that, I had to divert him to Coventry's training ground because he couldn't just come down here, there was snow that night, so I did have a bead of sweat on my brow, to be honest.

"The club secretary, Dave Sams, got it over the line at 10.55.

"All in all, everyone at the club pulled their weight."

Reading, Hull City and Preston North End in race to sign in-form Bristol Rovers star Jonson Clarke-Harris - reports

Coughlan admits he is unsurprised that clubs were keen on Clarke-Harris in January, but warned the player still has some developing to do yet.

He said: "There were some big clubs looking for him, he's that type of player, he's too big a player, too special a player to not be in your team.

"You always try and keep track and I had him at 18 at Southend and he was a special talent then. He still is and he's got better but he's got giant strides to make.

"He's got a lot of improvement to make but I don't want it to be the Jonson Clarke-Harris show, I want it to be about the group and the club.

"I want it to be about the other strikers as well, and about all of us.

"He's in there with us, he's fighting with us and fair play to him, he's given us a massive chance."
