How Bristol compares with rest of the UK as Covid-19 cases near 600

Bristol continues to have a relatively low number of confirmed coronavirus cases in comparison to similarly sized cities across the UK.

In terms of positive Covid-19 tests, the city is also behind a number of other areas in the south west, including Gloucestershire, Somerset and Devon.

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Bristol have risen to 593 as of yesterday (Wednesday, April 29), following a reported rise of nine positive tests in 24 hours.

Gloucestershire has the most confirmed cases in the south west with 1,491 people having tested positive for in the county, while Cornwall has the lowest with 482 people known to have contracted the virus.

Nationally, the highest number of confirmed cases are in Kent, where 3,272 people have tested positive.

The City of London has the lowest number of cases across the country, with just 16 people known to have contracted the virus in England's smallest county.

Compared to other cities with similar population numbers, Bristol is managing to keep its cases relatively low. Cities such as Liverpool and Manchester have reported 1,363 and 1,047 cases respectively.

Meanwhile, Birmingham has reported 2,782 cases - more than four times as many as in Bristol.

Regionally, the south west has the fewest number of confirmed cases, with 6,056 so far.

In comparison, the most cases have occurred in London, where 24,090 people have been tested positive for coronavirus, followed by the north west, which has seen 18,106 cases.

The death toll across the UK currently stands at 26,097 after 765 new deaths were confirmed yesterday (April 29).
