How Bristol compares to Tier 2 areas on coronavirus heat map

The Bristol region has lower coronavirus case rates than some areas in lower tiers, according to a data map.

The Government is expected to make a decision on tiers today (December 16), but so far there has been no indication Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset will move down from the strictest category, Tier 3.

King’s College London’s Covid Symptom Study has a heat map showing how our region compares to places under lighter restrictions.

The app tracks people with Covid-19 symptoms across the country and estimates the number of people with the virus on a given day.

All areas in our region have seen a drop in estimated active cases in the last week. The highest rate is the city of Bristol's – 3,451 cases per million people.

This is a lower figure than that of Stroud in Gloucestershire, which is believed to have a rate of 4,024, despite being in Tier 2.

Ipswich, also in Tier 2, has an even higher estimated rate of 4,385.

Some areas in Tier 2 do have a lower rate than Bristol, the map says. For example Liverpool, once one of the country's hotspots, is estimated to be at just 2,339.

With rates between 3,000 and 5,000, Bristol and South Gloucestershire are both in the second most severe tier on the study's heat map.

Here is each area’s rate of estimated active cases per million, as of today:

South Gloucestershire: 3,092 (down from 4,251 a week ago)

North Somerset: 2,932 (down from 3,940)

Bristol : 3,451 (down from 3,819)

Bath & North East Somerset (already in Tier 2): 1,862 (down from 3,304).

The app's data is based on health reports from people across the country as well as data from tests.
