How Bristol City's Adam Webster is reacting to his new nickname

It may not catch on, and to be frank a significant number of Bristol City fans are probably hoping it doesn't, but right now Middlesbrough match-winner Adam Webster is embracing his new nickname.

After scoring the only goal of the game with a powerful first-half header and then deliver the kind of resolute, cultured and technically-proficient defensively display that has become his stock-in-trade this season, it's no surprise he's being compared to a certain Italian legend.

When asked in the mixed zone at the Riverside if he should be called "Webdini", the centre-back grinned from ear to ear, chuckled to himself, and then replied: "Some would say, yeah."

Lee Johnson gets it right again while Bristol City's future is safe with Max O'Leary in goal

Paolo Maldini remains one of the most decorated and greatest footballers of all time, having made defending an art form over a remarkable 24-year career for AC Milan and Italy which saw him win seven Serie A titles, five Champions League plus a host of individual awards.

Webster, obviously, cannot compete with that wealth of silverware and, at just 24, is still in the early stages of what is an extremely promising career but his performances since signing from Ipswich last summer have been of the same level of consistency as Maldini.

Expected to be named Bristol City's Player of the Season, the centre-back also favours the left-hand side, similar to the Italian great.

He has been part of a City backline which has been an elite unit in the Championship this season and, true to the defender's union, admitted after the victory on Teeside that the clean sheet was more satisfying than the goal - his third of the campaign.

"[I prefer] the clean sheet. We've not had one for a while," Webster said, with City's last shutout against Blackburn on February 9.

"At one point we thought we would get one every game, we were on fire so it's nice to get another one and hopefully we can build on that.

"It was a tough game, we rode our luck at times , they were a good side but we could have been out of sight as well, we had some good chances and another day we score four or five. But thankfully we got the win."

The magic number of points Bristol City need to secure a play-off spot - and how many they're expected to get

Following a fallow spell before the international break in which City went an alarming five Championship games without victory, and dropped out of the top six, the 18-day rest has done them the power of good with back-to-back victories at Sheffield United and Middlesbrough.

The period of recovery and reflection also led to a formation change from Lee Johnson with the Bristol City head coach switching from a flat back four to a three-man defence with wing-backs.

Bailey Wright is positioned in the centre with Tomas Kalas to his right and Webster on his left shoulder. It provides the team with excellent balance in possession, with Kalas a right-footer and Webster naturally left; when the opposition are on the ball, Wright is usually the man-marker with Kalas and Webster sweeping behind the Australian.

Struggling Wigan Athletic visit Ashton Gate on Saturday with the dynamic shifting in terms of expectations given how poor the Latics have been on the road.

Wigan have just one win and three draws in 19 matches away from the DW Stadium, officially the worst record in the Championship.

"We changed formation for the last two games and it's suited us really well, we've played well in both games," said Webster. "That's helped. We had a long time between our games, a lot of time to recover and we've gone again.

"It's a really busy month, we've got so many games to come but you have to do everything right to recover and be ready come Saturday."
