How Bristol City could line up against Coventry City with Williams signed and Diedhiou deal close

It's just 20 days until the first ball of the Championship season is kicked, with Bristol City starting the campaign at Ashton Gate against Coventry City.

The Robins have now dipped their toe into the transfer market, bringing in Joe Williams from Wigan and, if Dean Holden's comments ring true, something else could be close.

With the new head coach still looking to bring in new names to his squad ahead of the campaign as well as cutting down on some of the unwanted personnel, things are starting to shape up for the season opener.

Holden favoured three at the back with wing backs in the friendly against Cheltenham and during his time as interim boss and it looks as if that could be his preferred formation for the coming season.

But with Williams signed and Famara Diedhiou reportedly close to signing a new contract at the club, Holden has plenty of options available to him ahead of the first game.

We've taken a look at how City could line up against the Sky Blues.

Goalkeeper

Dan Bentley looks set to continue his stint as Bristol City number one, although the recent kit reveal may suggest that Max O'Leary is set to stay put and be a part of the plans for the season.

Despite a couple of mistakes and dodgy moments, Bentley proved to be one of City's best new signings of the season and is one of the first names on the team sheet; that doesn't look set to change, but Holden could spring a surprise.

Defence

Let's assume that Holden will play a three at the back, you wouldn't be remiss to think that City need another defender in the squad (that is if Ashley Williams doesn't sign a new contract).

But as we stand, two of the three defenders are pretty obvious. Tomas Kalas and Nathan Baker look set to start the first game of the season, and it's the other spot which throws up some questions.

Zak Vyner and Taylor Moore will battle it out for that spot for the time being, with the two young defenders both impressing at times this season.

Moore started the season well before being shipped out to Blackpool, before Vyner was recalled from Aberdeen and did well in his games under Holden during his time as interim head coach.

Vyner played against Cheltenham but both will look to impress Holden to grab that third spot. For the wing-backs, Dasilva will likely start on the left and Jack Hunt will start on the right, should another player not be brought in.

Midfield

This is where things get quite complicated. To put things simply, Holden could chose between one holding midfielder and two attacking, or vice versa, with Joe Williams, Liam Walsh, Joe Morrell, Jamie Paterson and others able to play in both positions, Andi Weimann, Kasey Palmer and Sammie Szmodics options at 10 and Callum O'Dowda and Niclas Eliasson looking out of the running despite their obvious talent. Yep, that's simply.

There are several options for Holden to consider and with the arrival of Williams it makes things more complicated - but is a good problem.

Despite the youth, there is a wealth of talent and the midfield looks well rounded, with even Tyreeq Bakinson impressing against Cheltenham Town, and it's almost impossible to predict how Holden will set his midfield up against Coventry on September 12.

Forwards

If Diedhiou signs a new deal, it will be a huge boost to Holden. A 10-goal a season striker, fan favourite and good defensively, not to mention the fact that City will not have to spend big on a new forward.

To have him as another option next to Nahki Wells will be big for the Robins, with Wells a proven goalscorer too. They could be considered as one of the most dangerous strike partnerships in the league and with Weimann and Semenyo also available, the depth is currently looking okay.

Holden may consider another striker on loan, as the club did with Benik Afobe, but that will become clearer much later on.
