How Brazil battles are adding an edge to the Man City vs Liverpool FC title race

While Gareth Southgate has ended the club cliques on England duty that drove a division through the Three Lions squad for much of the past two decades, Brazil boss Tite might struggle to achieve the same harmony within his ranks.

Competition for places is greater in the Selecao ranks, as you'd expect, and in two key areas it's title rivals in the Premier League who are also battling for one spot with their country.

While City goalkeeper Ederson and Liverpool stopper Alisson are fighting for the league title, they're also in competition for the gloves with Brazil. In friendlies with the Panama and the Czech Republic over the last week the duties were split.

It was Ederson who played against the central American side in Porto in what was a disappointing 1-1 draw, but Alisson was unable to keep a clean sheet either, with Brazil beating the Czech Republic 3-1 in Prague.

Remarkably the game against Panama was only Ederson's fourth cap, with Alisson now up to 35. The City man has to take every opportunity he gets to put the pressure on the incumbent and his Liverpool rival.

Similarly Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino are on opposite ends of the divide domestically and then take the heat of that battle to Brazil, where they're usually fighting over one spot in Tite's starting line-up.

This is a battle that has swung Firmino's way recently, although it's Jesus who enjoyed the better international break.

During the World Cup Jesus started all five of Brazil's games, with Firmino beginning all of them on the bench. But since then the Liverpool man has started six of Brazil's eight fixtures, including all of the last five. Jesus has started just two of the eight games.

Against Panama Firmino started, with Jesus replacing him on the hour mark, but for 15 minutes in Prague they were on the pitch together.

Firmino had equalised just before half-time, but it was Jesus' arrival with 18 minutes to go that tilted the balance in Brazil's favour. The City striker scored just twice in the final 10 minutes to leave a lasting impression with Tite, netting once while out wide and then once having moved centrally once Firmino departed.

"He should be very happy with it," Tite said of Jesus' cameo from the bench.

"He left the box too much on the previous match, we talked among the staff and decided to try him from the flanks, it could provide more chances than overflowing the middle.

Man City have already made one of their most important signings for next season

"I'm happy he had those chances, not only on creating but also finishing."

It was a timely reminder from Jesus of just what he can offer Brazil, with this the final international break before the start of the Copa America in June, when Tite's side are in a group with Bolivia, Venezuela and Peru.

Ederson and Jesus have done all they can to take the places of Alisson and Firmino. Now they'll hope to come out on top in a tense and thrilling title race, which could make the first few days when the Brazil squad gather for the Copa America a little awkward.
