How Bordeaux's Josh Maja could bank Sunderland £1million this summer with Premier League move

Sunderland could bank £1million this summer, if Josh Maja makes a £10million move to the Premier League.

Weekend transfer speculation suggests West Ham and Crystal Palace are battling for the former Black Cats striker, with current side Bordeaux looking for £10million to sell the hot prospect.

Rangers were also credited with interest in the 21-year-old who left Sunderland in January 2019 after a superb start to the League One campaign. The saga over his contract running down was recently under the microscope during Sunderland 'Til I Die series two.

And while the decision to sell Maja to the French side in the Januar window for £1.5million was criticised at the time, one of the advantages of doing so and not waiting until the summer where they'd have received a paltry compensation fee, is that Sunderland's board were able to negotiate other clauses into the deal.

And one of those clauses is believed to be a ten per cent sell-on fee, meaning the Black Cats would be due ten per cent of whatever fee Bordeaux receive for Maja if/when they sell him.

If the Sun's claims of a £10million Premier League move this summer are to be believed then that would bank Sunderland £1million during the summer transfer window, at a time when many EFL clubs will still be struggling with the financial implications of the coronavirus crisis.

Whether Maja would be interested in the move remains to be seen. In an exclusive interview with Sunderland Live recently, Maja told us: "There was an opportunity for me to get game time and obviously looking at the league there are a lot of opportunities for young players coming through and a lot of chances for young players to play.

"That was the main reason why I wanted to come here, to improve and to get as much game time as I can.

"There were a few offers from the Premier League, from the Championship, from Germany and from Italy and it was about picking the right option for me and my family.

"There are not many young players breaking through consistently in the Premier League.

"Depending on who you are, if your goal is to play and improve then going out and getting game time and being in the right environment is so important.

"If that means you have to move abroad then so be it and that was the way I felt."

Since joining Bordeaux, the young striker who graduated from Sunderland's academy has netted seven goals in 22 games.
