How bin and waste collections in South Gloucestershire are set to change

The frequency of waste collection in South Gloucestershire is set to chage as council staff get retrained and redeployed.

Office-based staff at South Gloucestershire Council are set to be redeployed in the waste collection team in order to keep collections running.

Staff from the StreetCare team have been retrained and will leave the council headquarters to help with household waste collections during the coronavirus pandemic.

Several employees will now be working with the waste and recycling vehicles to keep the service running at a reduced rate.

From March 30, South Gloucestershire residents will now have their recycling and food waste bins emptied on a fortnightly basis instead of on a weekly basis.

The bins will be collected on the same day as the usual black bin collection.

South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Rachael Hunt said: “We are doing all we can to continue with essential waste collections during the Coronavirus outbreak while protecting our staff and residents.
“To make the best use of our workforce, we are redeploying staff who aren’t currently able to perform their usual roles but are able to support other essential functions.

"Our StreetCare department maintain a dynamic workforce at all times, where for example resurfacing staff may also drive gritting trucks when we experience winter weather, so are well placed to step in and help where needed most. My thanks go to those staff for their commitment and adaptability during these challenging times.”
