How big of an impact will Raiders WR Tyrell Williams have?

On Wednesday afternoon, the Oakland Raiders agreed to terms with veteran receiver Tyrell Williams, formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers. All of a sudden, the Raiders’ receiving corps looks much different than it did in 2018. More importantly, the pieces make sense together as the receivers complement each other well.

With Antonio Brown on the roster, he is locked into the team’s No. 1 receiver role. Most of his snaps will occur from the “X-receiver” position. Opposite him will be Williams, who is one of the best deep threats in the NFL. In 2018, Williams averaged 15.9 yards per reception, the most on the Chargers.

The best thing about Williams is he doesn’t need the ball to be effective. If he can back the safeties up due to his speed, that should allow Brown and Jalen Richard to work the underneath routes. If that’s not the case, Williams should have no problem beating single coverage down the field.

While we wait for the numbers to come out on Williams, it’s a perfect football fit for the Raiders. Expect Brown and Williams to be a massive upgrade for the Raiders this season.
