How Barcelona vs Liverpool could impact on Arsenal's pre-season plans

Barcelona are reportedly in negotiations with Arsenal to play the Gunners in the annual pre-season Joan Gamper trophy.

The match takes place each year in honour of Gamper who was a founding member, player and later president of the Catalan giants.

It is set to take place over the weekend of August 3-4 this year - but Arsenal's involvement could be directly affected by Barca's Champions League semi-final against Liverpool .

According to Mundo Deportivo, if both the Gunners and the Blaugrana are successful in their respective European competitions, Arsenal won't be involved in the friendly.

Barcelona face Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Champions League while Unai Emery's men face Valencia in the last four of the Europa League.

But if both sides win silverware on the continent, they will face off in the UEFA Super Cup on August 14.

Barcelona return from their pre-season tour of Japan in late July and have already arranged friendlies against Chelsea and Vissel Kobe.

The Catalan side have won the Joan Gamper trophy on each of the last six occasions, their last defeat coming against Sampdoria in the 2012 edition.

Manchester City were the last English club to take part in the match, back in 2009.
