How Barcelona and Man United missed Gabriel Martinelli with Arsenal star linked to Liverpool

Gabriel Martinelli has made quite an impact at Arsenal this season.

The 18-year-old was signed in the summer from Ituano for a fee of around £7million.

Martinelli was certainly signed with one eye on the future, and few could have hoped for the impressive return he's had so far for the Gunners, registering 10 goals in 21 appearances so far this season in all competitions.

But Arsenal might not have had the chance to sign him at all had other clubs moved faster.

The youngster previously had trials with both Barcelona and Manchester United, but neither club elected to move for the attacker, with Arsenal taking a gamble following glowing reports from Francis Cagigao - the scout who discovered Hector Bellerin for the Gunners.

Martinelli's form is also reportedly attracting interest from Liverpool, with Football Insider stating that the club's recruitment team are keeping a close eye on Martinelli following his stunning start to life in England.

Jurgen Klopp's team got an up-close look at the youngster in the Carabao Cup tie at Anfield, which finished 5-5 after 90 minutes, with Liverpool winning on penalties.

The striker has scored in consecutive Premier League appearances against Sheffield United and Chelsea, playing a larger role in the team after Mikel Arteta's arrival - though Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's three-game suspension has played its part in that increase in game time.
