How Arsenal's Nicolas Pepe celebrated Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's winner vs Newcastle

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang received all the plaudits as his goal ensured Arsenal secured a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the weekend.

And rightly so. It was the only goal of the game and ensured the Gunners - much like Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United - began the new Premier League season with three points.

But £72m record signing Nicolas Pepe also acknowledged the role of Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the build-up to the goal.

The versatile Gunners star once again started a game at full-back - a position he can expect to hold down until Hector Bellerin is ready to make his return from injury.

Using his pace to intercept a cross field pass, he immediately turned defence into attack for the visitors.

Remaining calm to pick out an unmarked Aubameyang, Maitland-Niles registered an assist as with two touches the Gabon international dinked the ball over Martin Dubrvaka to break the deadlock.

The 30-year-old peeled off to demonstrate his trademark celebration and was soon joined by his teammates.

But while all the credit went Aubameyang's way, Pepe made sure to point out the role of Maitland-Niles.

As captured by the new 'bench cam' feature on the club's official website, the Ivory Coast international appears to be calling Maitland-Niles and then upon getting his attention gives him the thumbs up for the assist.

Pepe had to wait until the second half to make his first Arsenal appearance following his record £72m transfer last month and head coach Unai Emery explained why.

"[Nicolas] Pepe is different. He is now in pre-season," the Spaniard said in his post-match press conference. "He came one week ago, physically he needs to get the best paces, to get fit, to be ready to play 100 per cent for 90 minutes.

"Today 20 minutes is good for him.

"[Dani] Ceballos is in the middle. He came before Pepe and he had an injury and stopped training.

"He needs also to know the Premier League.

"The first match for him is important for us. That's the reason."
