How Arsenal and Chelsea's Europa League final could seal Nabil Fekir and Tanguy Ndombele's fates

Lyon are close to seal a return to the Champions League proper next season after defeating Olympique Marseille in Ligue 1.

Their 3-0 win saw goals from Maxwel Cornet and former Fulham and Celtic striker Moussa Dembele secure the seven-time French champions in third place in the table with only two games left to play.

After St Etienne lost 1-0 to Montpellier in their match, Lyon are now four points ahead of their closest rivals for third, a position that will grant them a space in the qualifiers for the Champions League group stage.

However, the result of the all-English Europa League final between Arsenal and Chelsea could send them through without needing to play a qualifier.

A win for the Blues would gift them a group stage place by default, and in doing so change the dynamics of a summer transfer window that could see Lyon lose their best players.

Nabil Fekir almost sealed a move to Liverpool last summer only for the deal to break down.

Tanguy Ndombele has been linked to Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur with Moussa Dembele also tipped for a return to England.

Houssem Aouar and Memphis Depay are two other impressive players in the squad that have been the subject of rumours surrounding moves elsewhere.

If Lyon can count on the income of the Champions League group stage, and the promise of a campaign in Europe's biggest club competition, their attempts to retain their most potent players could be eased.

While Spurs fans may be cheering on Chelsea to beat their rivals, Arsenal, a victory for the Blues could make it harder for Mauricio Pochettino to cut a deal on the sort of players to upgrade their squad next season.
