How are Barcelona fans getting to Old Trafford? These are the travel plans ahead of Manchester United clash

There is no organised march being planned by Barcelona fans for tomorrow's big Champions League clash with United.

The Catalan giants take on the Reds  in the first leg of their quarter final tie on Wednesday night, which kicks-off at 8pm.

Previous European games at both Old Trafford and the Etihad have led to travel chaos across the city, with thousands of fans making their way to the games as well as commuters trying to get home.

One of the key causes has been organised marches by visiting fans which have led to rolling roadblocks and even more traffic congestion than usual in and around the city centre.

The chief constable of GMP has called for an end to the 'custom and practice' of fan marches due to the disruption caused.

However these are normally done by German and Dutch sides and no such march is planned tomorrow.

The visiting Barcelona fans have been advised to get the tram to the ground, as was the case with Paris St Germain fans for their trip in February.

Barcelona were allocated around 3,500 tickets and so far they haven't sold their full allocation, the M.E.N understands, with United expecting around 2,000 to make the trip.

This may have been affected by United charging them 125 euros (£102) and using the money to subsidise their own fans' tickets after Barcelona said that is what United fans would be charged for the second leg at their ground.

On previous visits to both Old Trafford and the Etihad the fans have still been noisy and colourful, congregating in Piccadilly Gardens and Shambles Square in the hours  leading up to the game, which those travelling are expected to do again.

Travel advice has been issued by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) in both Catalan and Spanish pointing them to the key Metrolink stations in the city centre and near Old Trafford.

A TfGM spokesman said: “We are looking forward to welcoming Barcelona fans to Manchester for what’s sure to be another entertaining night of European football.

“Whether heading to the ground or not, roads and public transport will be busier than usual and we would encourage people to plan their journey accordingly by visiting our website or following our social media channels for the latest information and advice.”

Despite the reduced number of away fans, the home sections are sold out and transport bosses still expect it to be very busy on both the roads and trams.

Closures remain in place on Chester Road and the Deansgate Roundabout for the Regent Roadworks project which cause daily delays in the area.

In pun-filled messages referencing Barcelona players flashed up on traffic warning screens this week, TfGM advised people to use public transport to get the game if at all possible and for those travelling to the game or in and around the city centre to expect delays.

It said: ""MUFC v Barca. Old Trafford. Wed 10 APR. 20:00.

"Pique time will be Messi. Consider using tram or bus."
