How apartments planned for the site of a derelict Whitley Bay pub could look

A derelict Whitley Bay pub could be flattened to make way for apartments if plans lodged with the council are given the go-ahead.

North East Holdings Ltd is behind proposals to build a block comprised of 21 two-bedroom apartments "in a variety of sizes" on the site of the former 42nd Street pub.

A design and access statement submitted to North Tyneside Council said that new housing in the area would bring money into the local economy and claimed this scheme would "contribute significantly" to the overall regeneration of the area.

The pub has been empty for three years and the document claims that the development is the opportunity to remove a blight on the town.

It said that along with other former sea front venues the derelict hostelry has become associated with anti-social behaviour and disturbance; damaging the town's image as a family friendly location.

It said: "The proposed development provides a unique opportunity to redevelop the final and most prominent problematic pub on the Whitley Bay sea front, which will be a key milestone in completing the regeneration of Whitley Bay."

Despite this three objections have been submitted to the council, with concerned residents raising fears about the design, parking, and number of unsold properties on the coast.

However, the builder says housing plans have been in the works for a year, and it taken on local feedback to create a "high quality" scheme.

The statement added: "The final proposal submitted with this application addresses issues raised and provides a high-quality building that sits well on the prominent seafront of Whitley Bay."

North Tyneside Council is expected to make a decision on the application by late April.
