How Andy Robertson helped convince Ben Woodburn to make Liverpool loan transfer

Ben Woodburn has revealed he reached out to Andy Robertson prior to completing his loan switch to Hearts.

Woodburn's move to the Scottish Premiership side was confirmed yesterday and will see the Reds midfielder spend the remainder of the 2021/22 season at Tynecastle Park.

The 21-year-old has been sent out on loan for the past three seasons and will now prepare for his first taste of Scottish football, having previously represented Sheffield United, Oxford United and Blackpool.

Woodburn sought the advice of Robertson prior to accepting this challenge, given the relationships the Liverpool left-back has developed with current Hearts players such as Craig Gordon , Gary Mackay-Steven and John Souttar while on international duty and from his time spent in Scotland as a player.

Speaking to Hearts TV, the Liverpool youngster said: “I’m delighted to be here and get the deal done. It’s been a couple of weeks now that I’ve known Hearts were interested and now I’m here I just can't wait to get started.

“When I heard about the interest, I was buzzing. I spoke to Andy Robertson. He talked about a few of the boys he knows. He said there is a good bunch of lads here and I should enjoy it.

“I spoke to the manager before I came up and he had a vision for me, and I agreed with what he thought. It was a good combination

“It just looks like a massive club. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans and see the atmosphere. I’m buzzing to be here and hopefully I can prove to them (the fans) that I can be a great player for you."

Hearts have enjoyed a strong start to the top-flight season and have recovered well from their points-per-game relegation in the 2019/20 campaign.

Robbie Neilson's side are unbeaten after three games and Woodburn is already relishing the prospect of earning first-team minutes.

“I think with the games coming, that (Edinburgh derby vs. Hibernian) is definitely one (to look forward to). I’ve heard about the rivalry and that’s something I’d love to be involved in. I can’t wait," he added.
