How Andy Robertson could help Ben Chilwell achieve his ambition after £50m Chelsea transfer

New Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell revealed his ambition to be the best left-back in the world.

The full-back arrived at Stamford Bridge last week after an agreement of £50 million plus add-ons was reached with Leicester City.

Chilwell made his way up through the academy at the King Power Stadium, making his first-team debut in 2016, before going onto establish himself as the club’s first-choice left-back in the last three seasons.

Writing in his Players Tribune column back in December, the defender spoke of his rise into professional football and the ambitions that he now has, and has specifically named one full-back who he looks up to for inspiration.

“I want to be the best left-back in the world,” he wrote.

“That feels good to say.

“It feels possible, too, because I look at a guy like Andy Robertson at Liverpool. He has a great story, right? Almost quit, like I did, kept at it, pushed himself past the limits he thought he had, and now he’s one of the best in the world.

“I had a good chat with him a few months back at Trent Alexander-Arnold’s birthday dinner.

Anyway, I spoke with Andy for a bit and I told him he’s class and whatnot and he said the same to me. It was really cool to chat with him. And just to sort of pick his brain for a bit about football, it meant a lot to me.”

Chilwell has gone onto establish himself as Gareth Southgate’s first-choice left-back for England, but the 23-year-old will miss the upcoming international games due to a heel injury.

It is a problem that could also see him miss the start of the season for Chelsea.
